Presentation
EMG pickups entered the legend of Rock and Metal in the late 80s thanks to an innovative design and new technology.
Whether it's the 81/85 or 81/60 pair, the greatest guitarists in the field have at one time or another switched to these active pickups which have the particularity of having a preamp powered by a 9V battery in order to naturally boost the signal and filter electrical interference for a silent rendering.
The 81 is a cornerstone of modern saturated sound, thanks to its blade design (and not the classic screw + studs) which provides an equivalent magnetic field over the entire vibration surface of the strings for a balanced attack, no matter how you play.
The ceramic magnet, meanwhile, provides brilliance and surgical precision and a fairly substantial output level.
The problem is that to ensure its operation you must always have a 9V battery on hand, you must unplug its Jack when not in use, ... In short, some habits that can become annoying.
EMG responds to this with its passive HZ series, which takes up the design of its flagship references but in a totally passive version.
Here the H4 in ceramic version (exists in AlNiCo), which is a recreation of the original 81 but without preamp to obtain the best of both worlds: the punch and midrange of the 81, the warmth and dynamics of a PAF.
