Ribbon Microphone

The WA-44 ribbon microphone from Warm Audio is a true homage to the legendary RCA 44BX microphones of the 1930s. Equipped with a 2.5 micron aluminum ribbon and a powerful neodymium magnet, it captures deep bass with a pronounced proximity effect, bright mids, and softened highs. Thanks to its custom CineMag USA transformer, the WA-44 offers faithful reproduction of vintage tones. The figure-8 directivity provides ideal acoustic isolation for clear and precise recordings, while maintaining a robust design for everyday studio use. With its careful manufacturing and premium components, the Warm Audio WA-44 promises an unparalleled sound experience.

Why is WA-44 WA-44?

- Custom Japanese Ribbon
The WA-44 features a 99.1% pure aluminum ribbon, custom made in Japan, reminiscent of vintage RCA 44 pickups. With a nearly identical length of 60mm and a thickness of 2.5 microns, this ribbon stands out, enriching the sound compared to smaller ribbon designs. Ribbon purity is essential for detail and frequency response; even slight impurities can dull output and clarity, increasing background noise.

- Large CineMag Transformer, Made in USA
The WA-44 uses a custom-made CineMag output transformer in the USA. This transformer gives the mic the rich depth and character of the ribbon, including lush mids and smooth highs. The CineMag inside the WA-44 also allows for excellent compatibility with modern preamps and studio equipment, even providing some protection against accidental use of 48V phantom power.

- Robust Neodymium Magnet
The WA-44's ribbon is suspended between the poles of a premium neodymium magnet. While vintage RCA 44 ribbon mics used AlNiCo magnets, neodymium magnets are significantly more powerful and have become the new standard in premium ribbon mic manufacturing. This allows for more efficient conversion of sound energy into an electrical signal. Neodymium is also much less likely to degrade, ensuring increased longevity with regular use.

- Gotham AG Premium Cable
Often overlooked, the cable connecting a mic to its preamplifier is a critical part of the signal chain. The WA-44 uses a Star-Quad shielded XLR pigtail cable from Gotham, Switzerland. The design and manufacturing quality of this cable increases the presence of high frequencies and the overall size of the image recorded in the stereo field by reducing the phase shift and spurious effect often present in poorly designed cables.
